The expectations were naturally high for this disc, and perhaps undermining their chosen title, it's anything but a letdown. Their lyrics approach spiritual themes in practical terms that secular rock fans can embrace, so they win high marks for not overpreaching. Mostly what's impressive, however, is the fact that in creating what the band calls the "Switchfoot sound," the guys and their producer John Fields vary the vibe and approach from track to track--creating some interesting stylistic and sonic diversity. "Meant to Live" is all anthemic alt-rock crunch, but "This Is Your Life" offers more of a trippy symphonic flavor with clearer vocals by Jon Foreman and more acoustic sounds in the forefront. "More Than Fine" is an acoustic guitar driven clapalong that features odd sonic effects and a punk sensibility. The title track throbs with a prominent baseline, a breathy vocal and odd metered percussion. Consider it spiritual rock with the same potential for surprises that God brings to life. ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide
